Because 80s/90s boosted cars that haven't died a firey death always do.

I finally got the courage up to tackle the last two spark plugs for a check.

You need courage for these two because. Well, there's a chance you'll wind up in the Emergency room for stitches if you don't remove half of the stuff under the hood.

The plugs on cylinders 1 and 4 are coal black.

I'm leaning toward a bad coil pack as cyl 1 and 4 are both atvthe front of the block. But a stuck injector isn't out of the question nor is bad grounding.

I promise a full photo tour of the car this weekend.

there is a very weird special place in my heart for these. The one time I bought one at auction, a black with red interior super coupe, I didn't make it home before the head gasket blew. Cant wait to see the bits, and good luck

Turn on the AM radio and if you hear a bunch of static where you shouldn't, then your coils are going.

The radio will be the first part of the tour. The first thing the PO did was slam an aftermarket head unit in, broken, and rigged a "system" up. She got ghettoed.

Looks like incomplete burn to me. So maybe dirty injectors or ignition timing? Coils usually get worse under heavier load, I.e. fine at idle but misfire while accelerating. Or leaky valves perhaps. I'm not at all familiar with these so it might be best to ignore me.
